Boyz n the Hood the nineties classic film is getting its soundtrack issued on vinyl for the very first time, this September via Qest.
Boyz n the Hood was first released in 1991. Directed by John Singleton as his debut film and also the screen debut for Ice Cube. The film also starred Cuba Gooding Jr., Morris Chestnut, and Larry Fishburne. John Singleton went on to direct Poetic Justice, 2 Fast 2 Furious and Abduction. Boyz n the Hood was based on Singleton’s upbringing and shot in his old neighborhood.
The ingenious coming of age film was nominated for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay at the 64th Academy Awards, making Singleton the youngest person as well as the first African-American to be nominated for Best Director. Boyz n the Hood’s soundtrack features a combination of hip hop, jazz, RnB, and funk.
The Boyz N The Hood limited edition 2LP also features one new song on vinyl for the first time. “Black On Black Crime” by Stanley Clarke and “Setembro” – Quincy Jones, has been added to this pressing. The release honors the legacy of the great John Singleton, who tragically passed away earlier this year.
Speaking on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Ice Cube shared about his meeting with the late John Singleton. He said “He came up to me and said, ‘when I graduate I’m going to put you in a movie’. “My manager came a year later and said ‘someone wants to put you in a movie’. When I read the script, I was like ‘this is a hell of a movie, Boyz n The Hood’.”
